Hybrid event: Face-to-face and virtual. We will wait for you!

WELCOME!

IX International Congress of Disability and Quality of Life

On behalf of the Programme Committee for the 9th International Congress of Disability and Quality of Life, “Long Term Care Integration: An International General Overview”, we’d like to welcome you to this new edition, in-person once again, at the AXA Auditorium on 6-7 November 2023. This year, in addition, with the aim of reaching more people, it will be possible to follow it virtually.

At the previous edition of the congress, we sought to clarify the confusion in Spain as regards usage of the term “sociosanitario” (long-term care) which, during the pandemic, unfortunately became synonymous with the devasting effects of COVID that we all know and have experienced.

COVID’s impact when underlining the consequences of a lack of integration between health and social care systems in the situation of severe illness and death, should have led to an in-depth reflection. The name “centro sociosanitario” (long-term care centre) should be reserved for establishments equipped with sufficient, appropriate social and health professionals who work as a team to tackle the multimobidity of the elderly patients who use this service, in addition to all the repercussions for their health and social needs, while offering guarantees and quality. It’s clear that whether they’re referred to as homes or long-term care centres, they are usually establishments in the social sector with insufficient, or clearly deficient, health coverage. They’re neither long-term care centres, nor do they have integrated social and healthcare services. The reality is this sector must be developed further, and this congress has once again been devised with a desire to contribute to this goal.

As usual, the event will have leading national and international speakers, with the aim of continuing to be the leading socio-health integration congress in Spain.

Like its previous editions, this year’s congress will have an opening ceremony that will involve a debate between three renowned care professionals: in the field of taking care (more specifically the ethics of care), Victoria Camps; and regarding healthcare with a comprehensive outlook and research to improve the quality of life of the elderly, Dr Buenaventura Clotet, who had a notable role in tackling COVID in Spain, and Ana Pastor who, apart from having been the Minister for Health, is highly knowledgeable about the issue arising from the deficit in socio-health integration. In addition, there will be four main modules that will constitute the core of the congress, as well as twelve parallel sessions and poster sessions.

Regarding the main modules, firstly the congress will look at the integrated health and social care situation in three European countries/regions (the UK, Finland and Flanders), and then it will take a look at integrated home-based social and healthcare based on a patient experience that professionals will react to by presenting aspects from the care model, advanced telecare and technological innovation. On day two, we’ll address the issue of fragility and vulnerability in the elderly, with different social and health professionals. Lastly, as we are aware of the importance of funding for social and health care services, as well as different payment systems (according to their nature, integration can be improved or quite the opposite), international and Spanish models will be presented, along with a specific experience from of Catalonia.

We’ll soon be in a position to present our programme – now at an advanced stage of development and expected to be completed soon – which details the different speakers and moderators who have been carefully chosen in order to maximise their potential added value.

We’ll see you all soon at the congress!
